An open letter to the U.S. Congress

‘Just for Fun’ is Not a War Policy

‘Just for Fun’ Is Not a War Policy   The President of the United States publicly stated this week that he may order additional strikes on Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal "just for fun."   Fun. Three weeks into a war that has already killed more than 2,000 people.   This is not hyperbole or a misquote. It is the president's own words — and they demand recognition from Congress that his cavalier attitude toward this deadly war and the economic havoc it has caused around the world renders him unable to lead it.    The consequences of this conflict are severe and growing: the Strait of Hormuz has been shut down, gas prices have surged over 24% since the war began, and JPMorgan warns that continued strikes on Iranian oil infrastructure risk triggering severe regional retaliation. The stakes could not be higher.   And yet Congress has not authorized this war. The Constitution grants that power to you — not the president alone. The War Powers Act exists precisely for this moment.   I urge you to: 1. Demand an immediate briefing and full accounting of the legal basis for these military operations. 2. Introduce or support a War Powers resolution requiring Congressional authorization to continue. 3. Go on the record. Your constituents deserve to know where you stand.   War is not a recreational activity. Congress must act.
