An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Safeguarding American Elections from Interference

Recent statements and actions by the President raise serious concerns about the integrity and protection of U.S. elections. In early 2026, President Trump publicly suggested that the United States “shouldn’t even have” the upcoming midterm elections and mused about cancelling them — even while aides later described the comments as “facetious.” Such remarks are deeply troubling because they undermine confidence in the democratic process and echo a pattern of rhetoric aimed at weakening electoral norms. At the same time, the administration has voiced intentions to target mail‑in voting, claims to restrict widely used vote‑counting technologies, and has criticized existing voting methods without evidence of widespread fraud. Efforts to centralize control over how elections are run risk infringing on state authority and could disrupt access to the ballot box. The U.S. Constitution, federal law, and established practice make clear that congressional elections cannot be postponed or cancelled unilaterally by a President, and that states have primary authority over how elections are administered. Attempts to bypass these legal frameworks threaten the fundamental principle of representative democracy. Congress has a constitutional obligation to protect the right to vote and ensure that elections are free, fair, and beyond improper influence. Oversight and action should include: - Investigating statements or proposals that could undermine electoral integrity - Assessing attempts to centralize or politicize election administration - Protecting access to voting methods legal in many states, such as mail‑in ballots and secure voting machines - Clarifying statutory safeguards that prevent interference with scheduled elections Free and fair elections are the foundation of American democracy. Any actions or rhetoric suggesting otherwise must be thoroughly examined and addressed by Congress to safeguard the electoral process and ensure all eligible voters can participate without fear of interference or delay.
