An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Uphold press freedoms, protect journalists covering protests

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Reports of journalists being targeted during protests are deeply concerning, undermining press freedom and the public's right to information. The footage of an Australian reporter being struck by a rubber bullet while reporting live is unacceptable. This incident follows a pattern of journalists facing threats and attacks while covering protests, which risks chilling vital reporting on matters of public interest. Elected representatives have a responsibility to uphold constitutional rights and denounce any actions that impede the media's ability to do its job safely and without fear of violence or retaliation. Leadership is needed to de-escalate tensions, facilitate peaceful assembly, and protect members of the press carrying out their essential role as observers and chroniclers. A strong rebuke of this latest attack, firm commitments to protect journalists, and a reaffirmation of press freedoms would demonstrate a commitment to democratic values.
