Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose and vote NO on the union-busting Federal Workforce Freedom Act.
This deceptively named legislation offer no freedom except for business to exploit government workers as they already have. It also poses an indirect threat to the rights and well-being of all union workers.
Prohibiting federal employees from organizing and collectively bargaining undermines their ability to advocate for fair treatment, reasonable compensation, and safe working conditions. They are no different from other workers in wanting a livable wage, benefits and fair treatment by the agencies that employ them, no different from factory workers, bus drivers, or school maintenance employees.
Public sector unions play a crucial role in ensuring government accountability and protecting workers from exploitation. Dismantling these unions and terminating existing collective bargaining agreements could lead to decreased efficiency, lower morale, and greater turnover within the federal workforce.
The likely loss of experienced personnel would ultimately impair the government's ability to effectively serve the American people.
But of course, Republicans like Mike Lee and Marsha Blackburn want this travesty of a bill to bust the unions: It would allow them to show how ‘inefficient’ and ‘lazy’ these government workers are. It also plays right into their uphold the billionaires and greedy corporations playbook.
Furthermore, the proposed ban disregards decades of progress in securing labor rights and perpetuates an adversarial relationship between workers and management.
Upholding the right to unionize and bargain collectively is essential for a thriving democracy. - we must value the dignity of work and the voice of the people.
I urge you to reject the Federal Workforce Freedom Act, vote NO, and instead work to strengthen protections for the hardworking public servants who keep our government functioning.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
