Today I take pen in hand to write and express my strong support for S. 2912, the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act of 2025, recently introduced by Senator Angela Alsobrooks. This crucial legislation addresses a critical issue in our democracy: the protection of every citizen's right to vote without fear of deception or intimidation.
This bill's timing is particularly significant as we approach future elections, and the warning signs we’ve already seen.
By prohibiting the dissemination of false information about voting within 60 days of an election, S. 2912 directly tackles one of the most insidious forms of voter suppression. This 60-day window is critical for maintaining the integrity of our electoral process when voters are most vulnerable to misinformation.
S. 2912 goes beyond just addressing misinformation. It also confronts actions intended to hinder voting, a practice that has unfortunately been part of our nation's history of voter suppression.
By including both civil and criminal penalties, the bill provides real teeth to deter those who would seek to undermine our democratic processes, in other words, the current regime. The threatened use of ‘poll-watchers’ members of the National Guard an Military are serious, and may require additional action.
I appreciate that the bill requires the Attorney General to report on these issues, ensuring ongoing vigilance and transparency. Moreover, the provision for corrective measures to counter misinformation is an essential step in ensuring that voters have access to accurate information.
The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy, and S. 2912 recognizes this by building on existing legal frameworks to strengthen protections for all eligible voters.
By creating a safer and more transparent voting environment, this bill will encourage greater participation in our electoral process.
I urge support S. 2912 and to encourage your colleagues to do the same. This bill is not just about protecting individual voters; it's about safeguarding the very foundation of our democratic system.
Please vote in favor of S. 2912 when it comes before you and actively work towards its passage. The integrity of our future elections depends on actions we take today.
Thank you.
