There is a recent attempt by private commercial companies to offer human burial services on the moon, specifically Celestis & Elysium, a company transporting human ash to the moon as planned on Monday’s United Launchpad Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket to be launched at Cape Canaveral. At present, this action is opposed by the Navajo Nation for sacred reasons. Whether sacred or not, and regardless of any practice we have on Earth for how we handle the disposal of human remains, this action (fueled by commercial gain) sets a very bad precedent regarding two widely different ecosystems that should be independently respected. It also demands that we on this planet should be more responsible for our own sustainability without turning the Moon into Earth’s future dumping ground. I trust you see the proverbial camel’s nose in the tent here and will cancel any such launch or practice until the international community has established a better protocol for how commercial ventures to the Moon can be regulated to protect the sanctity of all celestial bodies.
