An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defend 22nd Amendment, preserve democracy and democratic transfer of power.

The President's comments suggesting there could be methods for seeking an unconstitutional third term are deeply concerning for the preservation of our democratic system. The 22nd Amendment is a pillar of our constitutional order, ratified after witnessing the precariousness of unchecked executive power. Respect for term limits is essential to the peaceful transfer of power and prevention of a slide towards authoritarianism. Congress has a sworn duty to uphold the Constitution. They must emphatically reaffirm that no person can legitimately seek a third presidential term and reject any attempts to undermine or reinterpret the 22nd Amendment. Failing to do so would set a dangerous precedent that could irreparably erode our democratic foundations. The Constitution's system of checks and balances depends on elected leaders vigilantly guarding its provisions, no matter their political allegiances. Protecting our republic requires an unwavering commitment to its governing principles.
