Hold Secretaries Personally Liable If Student Loan Transfer Fails Borrowers

If you support transferring the $1.7 trillion federal student loan portfolio from the Department of Education to the Treasury, then Secretary McMahon and Secretary Bessent must be held personally liable for any failures that harm borrowers. Programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness cannot be disrupted during this transition. The government holds me accountable when I fail to meet my obligations. I face penalties, interest, and potential jail time if I don't pay my taxes. Yet when the government slow walks standard processes or mismanages programs that millions depend on, officials walk away without consequence. That double standard is unacceptable. The Department of Education has been barely functional for years, so I understand the rationale for change. But the Government Accountability Office already warned that federal student loan servicers have been repeatedly breaking the law without staff oversight, and nearly half of Federal Student Aid's workforce has been fired or pushed out since McMahon took over. If this transfer causes further delays in PSLF processing, loan forgiveness, or other critical functions, both secretaries should face the same consequences I would: monetary damages and civil liability. Make it clear that if this transition harms borrowers, there will be real accountability at the top.
