The Trump administration’s freezing of nearly $7 billion in congressionally allocated public education and children’s program funding is illegal and will negatively impact our community and every state in the country.
Congress approved and President Trump signed into law this FY2025 funding for students and classrooms along with after-school and summer programs as part of the March 2025 spending package. School districts were expecting funds to use for curriculum, technology, and other critical services and will be forced to cut educators’ salaries, student supports for English learners and migrant students, and lay off school staff—leading to significantly larger class sizes.
The withholding of these funds will also have an immediate and devastating impact on summer-school programs and after-school programs, which support 1.4 million students, many from low-income families. For example, up to 926 Boys and Girls Clubs that serve more than 220,000 kids are preparing to either cut programs or shutter them altogether within the next few weeks.
If these federal dollars are not released immediately, schools, summer programs, after-school programs, English-learning programs, and teacher training will all experience cuts that harm our communities. These cuts will have immediate and devastating consequences—and impact our economy and society over the long term.
I urge you and your colleagues to hold the Trump administration accountable and demand the immediate release of the nearly $7 billion in congressionally allocated public school and youth programming funding. Please stand up against attempts to steal resources from our community.
