I’m writing with the greatest urgency to ask President Biden to push to remove Sultan Al Jaber as President-Designate of COP28.
Climate change is an existential threat that transcends borders, economies, and political affiliations.
The upcoming COP28 climate talks in Dubai this November could be a crucial opportunity to forge the path toward a sustainable future. The question is whether Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi oil giant ADNOC and President-Designate of the upcoming COP28, can build that path -- or whether he’ll prioritize his fossil fuel industry ties. I think we all know the answer.
As the CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company al Jaber is responsible for maximizing the company's profits. Under his leadership ADNOC pumped 2.7 million barrels of oil per day in 2021. According to OPEC, he aims to nearly double that output by 2027. Increasing the production and consumption of fossil fuels -- a major contributor to global warming -- is in direct conflict with the leadership role al Jaber is to assume at COP28.
President Biden has enormous influence when it comes to al Jaber’s position. I’m writing to ask him to advocate for impartial and unbiased leadership at COP28 by pushing to remove Sultan Al Jaber as President-Designate. Thanks.
