An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve Civil Rights in Education, Support Equity

The Department of Education's decision to close over half of its civil rights offices nationwide and lay off a substantial portion of its staff is deeply concerning. By drastically reducing its capacity to investigate discrimination complaints, the agency is undermining its core mission of protecting students' civil rights and ensuring equal access to education. This move will disproportionately harm vulnerable student populations, including those with disabilities, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ students, who rely on the Office for Civil Rights to address instances of discrimination and unequal treatment. Furthermore, the Department's recent focus on "directed investigations" targeting policies that support transgender athletes and examine alleged discrimination against white students appears misguided and driven by ideological motivations rather than a genuine commitment to civil rights enforcement. Such investigations risk inflaming divisive rhetoric and diverting resources away from addressing systemic barriers and inequities that continue to plague our education system. I urge you to take action to preserve the Office for Civil Rights' vital work and regional presence, ensuring it remains adequately staffed and funded to fulfill its mandate effectively. Additionally, the Department should refocus its efforts on investigating legitimate civil rights violations based on evidence and community needs, not partisan agendas. Our students deserve an education system that promotes inclusivity, equity, and opportunity for all, regardless of their background or circumstances. Protecting civil rights in education should be a paramount priority.
