An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop Guantanamo migrant prison camp, uphold human rights

Building an offshore prison camp for migrants and asylum seekers at Guantanamo Bay is a disturbing and unlawful action by the Trump administration. Transferring detainees from the U.S. mainland to Guantanamo, a facility with a long history of human rights abuses, raises grave concerns about violation of due process and subjecting people to inhumane treatment. There is no justification for depriving migrants of basic legal protections and access to counsel simply because of their immigration status. The administration must immediately halt any plans to expand operations at Guantanamo for this purpose and uphold the human rights of all detainees. Establishing what amounts to a modern-day concentration camp offshore cannot be accepted in a nation built by immigrants that values human dignity and the rule of law. I urge you to use your authority to block this egregious policy and close Guantanamo once and for all.
