The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides vital retirement and disability benefits to over 72 million Americans. Recent proposed cuts and office closures by DOGE threaten to disrupt these essential payments and services for our most vulnerable citizens. We cannot allow workforce reductions of up to 50% or the shuttering of regional SSA offices that millions rely on for assistance with enrollment and resolving issues. These draconian measures would disproportionately impact those in poverty, the disabled, and those without access to computers. Failing to maintain the SSA's operational capacity risks a catastrophic system collapse, leaving elderly and disabled individuals without their lifeline Social Security income. It is imperative that no budget or spending legislation move forward unless it fully restores SSA funding, staffing levels and reopens closed field offices to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critically important Social Security benefits. Protecting this invaluable safety net program must be an utmost priority.
