An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Corporate Subsidies and Private Prison Expansion

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to urge you to oppose legislation that provides subsidies to corporations while simultaneously funding the expansion of detention centers and private prisons. This combination represents a dangerous shift in how our government allocates resources and threatens the civil liberties of all Americans. The current approach uses tariffs to compensate for economic gaps while funneling money to corporations through kickbacks and subsidies. At the same time, we are witnessing unprecedented expansion of detention facilities and private prison infrastructure. This raises a critical question: if the stated purpose is immigration enforcement, who will fill these facilities once deportations are complete? History shows that once built, such infrastructure rarely sits empty. Private prison corporations profit from incarceration, creating a perverse incentive to fill beds regardless of actual public safety needs. When we build extensive detention capacity beyond what is needed for stated purposes, we create infrastructure that can easily be repurposed against American citizens. This is not speculation but a pattern we have seen throughout history when governments invest heavily in detention infrastructure. The economic argument is equally troubling. We are extracting wealth from constituents through tariffs while simultaneously subsidizing corporations that do not need public assistance. This represents a transfer of resources from working people to corporate interests, weakening the economic security of your constituents. I urge you to vote against any legislation that combines corporate subsidies with expansion of detention and prison facilities. Instead, support policies that invest directly in communities, create genuine economic opportunity, and protect civil liberties. The infrastructure we build today will define the limits of freedom tomorrow. I request a response outlining your position on corporate subsidies and private prison expansion, and how you plan to protect constituents from these concerning trends.
