An open letter to the U.S. Congress

No Jokes About Ending Democracy: Stand Up for Free and Fair Elections

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I’m writing to express serious concern over remarks President Trump made during a White House summit on August 18, 2025. Amid discussions on Ukraine’s security, he joked that if the U.S. were at war in 2028, there would be “no more elections.” This statement strikes at the core of our democratic values. Even in jest, suggesting the suspension of elections during wartime is dangerous rhetoric that undermines public trust and the institutional stability of our republic. I urge you to publicly denounce such remarks, reaffirm your commitment to the sanctity of free and fair elections, and take concrete steps to safeguard them—regardless of circumstances. Thank you for standing up for democracy.
