I am writing to urge your immediate attention and decisive action regarding the ongoing human rights abuses occurring within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers.
It is unacceptable that ICE continues to operate with impunity—arresting individuals in aggressive, often unlawful ways, including agents covering their faces and failing to identify themselves. These practices erode trust, traumatize communities, and violate the very principles of justice and accountability that should guide our law enforcement institutions.
Equally alarming are the inhumane conditions inside many ICE facilities. Detainees often face unsanitary, overcrowded environments, lack of access to medical care, and basic human dignity stripped from their daily lives. These are not isolated incidents—they reflect a systemic failure that demands Congressional oversight and reform.
I call on you to seek justice for Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, a 38-year-old mother who suffered an unthinkable tragedy in ICE custody. She delivered a stillborn child—alone, without proper medical care, and under the custody of a system that failed her at every level. Her horrid treatment and the death of her baby is a moral outrage that cannot be ignored or dismissed.
Senator, we must do better. I urge you to:
1 Hold ICE accountable for illegal and excessive arrest tactics, including masked raids.
2 Mandate humane conditions in detention centers and guarantee access to adequate medical care.
3 Launch an independent investigation into the death of Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus’ baby and ensure justice for her family.
4 Advocate for alternatives to detention that uphold human rights while ensuring due process.
The U.S. government must not turn a blind eye to cruelty inflicted in its name. Upholding dignity, transparency, and justice must be our standard—not the exception.
