I urge you to vote against the SAVE act. The SAVE Act would require states to obtain proof of citizenship, such as a passport or a birth certificate, in person from those seeking to register to vote. It would penalize election officials for failing to seek such proof, and it would require states to proactively remove noncitizens from their voter rolls. The bill is unnecessary, and it would move to penalize officials for a problem that scarcely exists. They have also argued that its requirements were so onerous that they could discourage large swaths of Americans from registering or voting, including women who change their name upon marriage. I have been voting for more than 40 years, yet I would struggle to meet these requirements due to name change after marriage. Elections must be kept free and fair - and as simple as possible for people to attend and cast their vote. Putting endless obstructions in place disenfranchises voters and citizens, and is not what was intended by the Framers.
