Congress: Support Ukraine, Join UK’s Sanctions on Russian Shadow Tanker Fleet

Today I’m writing about bringing a speedier end to the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. I urge you to push for the US joining with the UK government's decision to impose fresh sanctions on 135 Russian oil tankers, along with two Russian firms. The UK understands this is a significant step towards disrupting Russia's ability to finance its invasion of Ukraine. These tankers form a crucial part of the Russian 'shadow fleet' responsible for transporting an estimated $24 billion worth of cargo since early 2024. The US can show real support for Ukraine by targeting this illicit network of ships. This is a real mission for the US Navy, I’ve no doubt we could stop and seize all of these ships an impound them so that their cargoes never get sold as the ships are interned and languish in ports…but maybe that’s not possible…yet. The sanctioned entities, including shipping company Intershipping Services LLC and oil trader Litasco Middle East DMCC, have enabled the transport of billions of dollars worth of Russian oil in defiance of previous measures. Crippling their operations will substantially impede Russia's capacity to circumvent existing sanctions and export its energy resources. This robust action demonstrates a firm commitment to holding the Kremlin accountable for its unwarranted aggression. Sustained economic pressure, coupled with military aid to Ukraine, remains crucial to bringing about a negotiated settlement that respects Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. I urge continued coordination with NATO allies to escalate financial restrictions on Moscow until it ends its unconscionable and bloody war. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
