As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support and pass legislation that protects fundamental principles of transparency and accountability in federal law enforcement. The following bills have been introduced in the House and Senate:
- The VISIBLE Act, introduced by Sen. Alex Padilla
- The No Masks for ICE Act, introduced by Rep. Nydia Velázquez
- The No Secret Police Act, introduced by Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat
At the heart of these bills is a simple, democratic principle: law enforcement agents operating on U.S. soil must be clearly identifiable to the public. The wearing of masks and refusal to disclose identities during ICE enforcement actions undermines public trust, raises serious civil liberties concerns, and runs counter to American democratic norms.
This concern has become even more urgent as ICE’s budget is now seeing a dramatic increase under the OBBB, expanding the agency’s resources and capacity for enforcement. With this massive influx of taxpayer dollars, Congress must also strengthen oversight and accountability.
No agency entrusted with significant power should operate in secrecy. The American people, regardless of political party, expect law enforcement to respect transparency, due process, and constitutional rights.
This is not a partisan issue. It is about safeguarding democratic norms and ensuring that all agencies acting in the name of the United States government do so with integrity and accountability.
I urge you to co-sponsor and vote for these commonsense reforms, and help restore public trust and accountability in federal law enforcement.
