Hold ICE to the same accountability rules as other law enforcement agencies

I'm asking you to hold federal immigration agents to the same accountability standards Americans expect from local police. When an ICE or Border Patrol agent shoots, kills or seriously injures someone, DHS should publicly name that agent within days. Agents doing public enforcement should work unmasked, with a visible name or badge number. Please support legislation that requires this and attach these conditions to any future immigration enforcement funding. Immigration agents have shot at least two dozen people in the past two years. Six have died, including three U.S. citizens. In January, federal agents killed two Americans in Minneapolis, and local prosecutors still haven't brought charges, partly because the federal government took months to hand over key evidence. In Houston this July, an ICE agent fired through a van window and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old father with no criminal record who wasn't even the person agents were looking for. None of the agents wore body cameras. DHS refused to tell members of Congress who fired the shot. Local police don't get to operate this way. Departments in cities like Houston, Dallas and San Antonio name officers involved in shootings within three days and release body camera footage within about a month. A 2023 Police Executive Research Forum survey found that among departments that name officers, more than 90% reported no resulting harm, and none reported physical violence. Even ICE's acting director said in 2025 that he wasn't a proponent of masks. Anyone paid with our tax dollars and trusted with a gun should answer to the public, whatever uniform they wear. Specifically, I ask you to support a requirement that DHS identify any agent involved in a shooting or serious injury within 72 hours, with narrow exceptions for undercover work. Body cameras should be mandatory, and footage should go promptly to state and local prosecutors investigating any death.
