As your constituent and an advocate for the American Library Association, I am writing to express my strong opposition to President Trump’s recent executive order that undermines the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). I urge you to take immediate action to protect this vital institution and ensure that libraries across Kentucky and the nation continue to receive the federal funding they rely on to serve our communities.
Public libraries are more than just book repositories—they are pillars of education, economic development, and civic engagement. The federal funding provided through IMLS helps libraries offer critical services, including literacy programs, job training, internet access, and resources for underserved populations. Without this support, many rural and economically disadvantaged communities will suffer, widening the already stark educational and digital divides.
Kentucky faces significant economic and educational challenges, and our libraries are part of the solution. They provide safe spaces for children to learn, job seekers to gain new skills, and families to access essential technology and resources. Cutting funding to IMLS will be devastating, stripping communities of these opportunities and weakening the foundation of our democracy.
This is not the will of the people of Kentucky. Libraries are cherished institutions that serve everyone, regardless of age, income, or background. I urge you to publicly oppose this executive order, fight to preserve funding for IMLS, and ensure that libraries remain a thriving part of our communities. Your leadership is needed now more than ever.
