Reject Big Bad Budget Bill: For the Climate, the Planet, and We The People

Today I’m writing on a very serious matter and another reason to reject the Big Bad Bill in the Senate: We know the House-passed "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" would utterly devastate efforts to address climate change and promote clean energy by gutting tax credits that have helped drive renewable energy growth and electric vehicle adoption. But that’s not all. While supporters argue the legislation will spur economic growth, it fails to account for the immense economic costs of unchecked climate impacts and needlessly imperils our health and future prosperity. This is the main point: We are increasingly seeing the side effects of our imbalanced climate. What all the industry and Republican ‘disbelief’ is really about is money to them. They know this is happening, the the oil and gas industry has known for decades what their polluting industry has done, but they choose to do nothing about it. They are choosing a bad path. This reckless bill would terminate crucial incentives like the clean vehicle credit, home energy efficiency credits, and tax breaks for businesses investing in clean energy just three years after their enactment through the Inflation Reduction Act. These policies have already created jobs, lowered household energy costs, and reduced emissions. Abruptly ending them would undercut American innovation and global competitiveness in the renewable sector. Moreover, the bill exacerbates climate risks by rolling back methane fees and fast-tracking fossil fuel projects. At a time when climate change is fueling more extreme weather, prioritizing polluting industries over a sustainable future is deeply misguided and foolish. As Bill McKibben of 350, the environmental action group has said: “ClimateChange is a series of ratchets that work one way…once you’ve melted the Arctic, no one has a plan for how you freeze it back up again.” There’s a clock…and it’s ticking. This bill, in some ways, speeds up the clock. We cannot afford to sacrifice environmental progress for short-term gains that ultimately cost far more through worsening climate impacts on our economy, infrastructure, health systems, and communities. No one voted to burn down our house, or flood our communities. The supporters of this bill are frankly fools. They just haven’t been touched yet, or if their districts have, they’ve done nothing in response but gut funding and science, and allow the President to play favorites with disaster relief. I urge you to reject this harmful bill, essentially a wish list for oil and gas industry, and instead support policies that build a cleaner, more resilient energy economy. Continuing effective climate action is vital for our nation's long-term security, prosperity, and well-being. We have an opportunity to lead the transition to climate solutions - an opportunity this bill squanders. You must put constituents' interests first by opposing efforts to undermine our climate response in H.R.1: Vote NO
