As an enthusiastic supporter of our national parks and a constituent, I'm writing to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), a landmark in land conservation. This Act, hailed as the most significant of its kind in decades, addresses a crucial $12 billion maintenance backlog, enhancing both the infrastructure and the natural beauty of our parks. It notably allocates $9 billion over five years for maintenance needs and secures $900 million annually for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, supporting vital federal and local conservation efforts.
This bipartisan achievement highlights the central role national parks play in our economy, health, and well-being, and reflects the shared value we place on these natural treasures. Projects under GAOA, from trail repairs in Mammoth Cave National Park to infrastructure overhauls in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, are more than just repairs; they are investments in our cultural heritage, local economies, and job creation.
Despite these strides, challenges remain. The GAOA's current funding does not fully cover the extensive backlog. The escalating costs of construction and recent natural disasters underscore the urgency of continued support. Our national parks are not only a source of national pride but also pivotal in fostering public health and enjoyment. As such, I urge your continued support in securing further funding and legislative backing to ensure the preservation and enhancement of these national jewels for future generations.
Thank you for considering my perspective.
