Uphold Judicial Authority: Vote No on Blanche as Attorney General

As your constituent, I urge you to vote against confirming Todd Blanche as Attorney General. The Attorney General must serve the Constitution, enforce the law impartially, and preserve Justice Department independence. Blanche’s record and post-hearing answers raise doubts about whether he would meet those obligations. POLITICAL RETALIATION, NOT IMPARTIAL JUSTICE Before joining the Department, Blanche served as President Trump’s personal defense lawyer. While he served in senior Justice Department leadership, federal prosecutors pursued cases or investigations involving Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey and Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan. Both men have been targets of the President’s attacks. Individual matters may have legitimate bases, but the pattern raises grave concerns about selective enforcement and political retaliation. HIS WRITTEN ANSWERS RAISE NEW DOUBTS ABOUT INDEPENDENCE In post-hearing answers, Blanche repeated his assertion that evidence exists that the 2020 election was rigged. He relied on undisclosed investigations and identified no public proof, despite the rejection or dismissal of numerous election challenges. He also declined to answer directly whether a President may order the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate a person. Those answers deepen concern that presidential preferences may shape law enforcement. THE EPSTEIN RECORD REQUIRES ANSWERS Blanche’s handling of Epstein matters requires scrutiny. Questions remain about omitted Federal Bureau of Investigation interview records and his lengthy interview of Ghislaine Maxwell shortly before her transfer to a minimum-security prison camp. After his hearing, Blanche met with Epstein survivors only after a Republican senator made the meeting a condition of advancing his nomination. Several survivors called the meeting dismissive and unproductive and said he offered no credible plan for further accountability. The Department called it productive. HIS RESPONSE TO COURT ORDERS RAISES RULE-OF-LAW CONCERNS The Department must comply with lawful court orders. In litigation over deportation flights, a federal judge found probable cause to believe officials had willfully disobeyed an order and began contempt proceedings. A divided appeals court later halted that inquiry without deciding that the conduct was proper. The Department’s response raises serious questions about Blanche’s commitment to judicial authority and the rule of law. CONCERNS EXTEND BEYOND PARTISAN OPPOSITION More than 1,200 former Justice Department employees have urged the Senate to reject Blanche’s nomination. Republican senators raised concerns during the hearing, and Senator John Cornyn remained undecided afterward. Taken together, Blanche’s record and written answers do not provide the confidence required for the nation’s chief law-enforcement officer.
