This presidential race has proven yet again just how undemocratic the electoral college is. Right now we wait to find out, not who the most people voted for, but if enough people in heavily gerrymandered states voted the same way as the majority of the country. Will this be yet another year where democracy fails in America.
We need so many fixes. We need an end to the electoral college, a ban on gerrymandering, universal voter registration, ranked choice voting, enough polling locations for 100% turnout, early voting, 24 hour voting, universal mail-by voting, a voting holiday, and guaranteed paid time off to vote. These are common features in more developed democracies. Simply trying to win a broken system is harmful to our democracy. We should be making it as accessible and inclusive as possible.
