I am deeply concerned by recent statements and proposals that threaten the right to peaceful protest, a fundamental aspect of our democracy. Specifically, the recent Truth Social post advocating for cutting federal funding to schools that allow protests, and the harsh penalties suggested for participants, including imprisonment, deportation, and expulsion, are alarming.
These views conflict with the First Amendment, which protects the right to peacefully assemble and petition the government. Peaceful protest is vital for holding power accountable and advancing social progress.
What is especially troubling is the double standard in how protests are treated depending on political alignment. President Trump has repeatedly praised the January 6 Capitol rioters, calling them “patriots” and “peaceful people,” despite the violence they caused. Yet, he now supports severe penalties for peaceful college protests.
This inconsistency suggests that approval or condemnation of protests is based on political interests, not principle. The First Amendment guarantees the right to dissent without fear of government retaliation. Any attempt to suppress this right undermines our democracy.
I urge you to reaffirm your commitment to protecting the First Amendment for all Americans and oppose any policies that penalize peaceful protest. Our constitutional freedoms must be defended—will it be you, or the Democrat who replaces you, who stands up for them?
