Protect Press Freedom – Investigate White House Retaliation Against the AP

8 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing to express deep concern over the Trump administration’s decision to bar the Associated Press (AP) from White House events in apparent retaliation for its refusal to use politically motivated terminology. This move is a direct attack on press freedom and the First Amendment, setting a dangerous precedent for government interference in independent journalism. A free and independent press is fundamental to our democracy. Government officials cannot selectively grant or deny access to journalists based on whether they report favorably or comply with executive directives. The press serves the people, not the president, and it is unacceptable for any administration to weaponize access to punish outlets that do not conform to its preferred narratives. I urge you to take immediate action to protect press freedom: 1. Investigate the White House’s Press Restrictions – Congress must hold hearings to examine whether the administration’s decision to bar the AP constitutes unconstitutional retaliation. 2. Support Legislation Protecting Press Access – Federal laws should prevent any administration from using press credentials as a tool of political coercion. 3. Issue a Public Statement Condemning Retaliation Against Journalists – Bipartisan condemnation is essential to reaffirm America’s commitment to a free press. 4. Request a DOJ Legal Review – The Justice Department should determine whether these actions violate constitutional protections. 5. Support Legal Challenges from Press Organizations – Congress must stand with media organizations fighting for their right to report freely. The role of the press is to inform the public, not to serve as a mouthpiece for those in power. The American people deserve transparency and accountability, and that requires a press corps that can operate without fear of political retaliation. I urge you to take a stand and act swiftly to protect press freedom before this dangerous precedent escalates. Thank you for your time and commitment to upholding the Constitution.
