An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Do not alienate our allies! Support democracy and Ukraine!

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my deep dismay over President Donald Trump’s recent treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their meeting on February 28, 2025. The abrupt and confrontational manner in which President Trump and Vice President JD Vance addressed President Zelenskyy not only undermines the longstanding alliance between the United States and Ukraine but also jeopardizes global perceptions of America’s commitment to supporting democracies under threat. Reports indicate that the Oval Office meeting, intended to solidify a minerals agreement and discuss ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia, devolved into a heated exchange. President Trump accused President Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War III” and questioned his gratitude towards U.S. assistance. Vice President Vance further criticized President Zelenskyy, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled press conference and the abrupt termination of the meeting without any agreements signed. Such behavior not only disrespects a key ally but also sends a troubling message to adversaries like Russia, potentially emboldening their aggressive actions. Moreover, it undermines the morale of the Ukrainian people, who rely heavily on U.S. support in their struggle for sovereignty and democratic values. I urge you to take the following actions: 1. Publicly Condemn the President’s Actions: Issue a statement reaffirming Congress’s unwavering support for Ukraine and denouncing the inappropriate treatment of President Zelenskyy. 2. Reaffirm Commitment to Ukrainian Aid: Advocate for continued and, if necessary, increased military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, ensuring they have the resources needed to defend against aggression. 3. Promote Diplomatic Engagement: Encourage the administration to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue with Ukrainian leadership, recognizing the mutual benefits of a strong U.S.-Ukraine partnership. The United States has long stood as a beacon of democracy and a steadfast ally to nations resisting authoritarianism. It is imperative that our leaders uphold these principles through actions that reflect respect, solidarity, and a commitment to shared democratic values. Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. I look forward to your response and to the steps you will take to support our allies and uphold the dignity of U.S. foreign relations.
