An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Taiwan should be called Taiwan.

As a constituent, I propose that in all U.S. government official communications, as well as in public policy related to education, including schools and universities, Taiwan be referred to simply as “Taiwan.” This approach is pragmatic and simple, adhering to the United States’ policy of maintaining the status quo. Standardizing the use of “Taiwan” across various platforms and institutions, including educational ones, recognizes that the U.S. is not beholden to another nation’s rules regarding nomenclature. It also minimizes confusion and unnecessary political implications, while aligning with our policy of not taking a stance on sovereignty issues. Referring to Taiwan as “Taiwan” in a consistent manner across all public sectors is a straightforward and factual way of referencing Taiwan that respects the current dynamics without altering U.S. foreign policy. It provides clarity and uniformity in our domestic and international discourse. I trust this suggestion will be considered for its practicality and alignment with our nation’s diplomatic principles and educational integrity.
