Uphold the veto on HB2062 - Don't Erase Queer Youth!

This proposed legislation poses a serious threat to the well-being and support systems for LGBTQ+ youth in our state. By prohibiting the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data, it will directly undermine our ability to understand the needs and challenges faced by this vulnerable population. Anonymous surveys and data collection are crucial for informing policies, programs, and resource allocation aimed at providing essential services and support to queer youth. Without accurate SOGI data, these vital initiatives could face severe budget cuts or defunding due to the perceived lack of need. This not only jeopardizes the mental health and safety of LGBTQ+ youth but also deprives them of access to affirming resources and inclusive environments that allow them to thrive. Forcing individuals to be categorized solely as "male" or "female" erases and invalidates the identities of non-binary, genderfluid, and transgender individuals. We cannot turn a blind eye to the existence and experiences of our LGBTQ+ youth. I urge you to vehemently oppose this harmful legislation that would erase an already marginalized community from official records and statistics. Protecting the rights and well-being of all our youth should be a top priority, and this bill directly contradicts that fundamental responsibility.
