An open letter to State Legislatures (Wash. only)

No Police Exemptions in SB 6002 — Protect Civil Rights

4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I strongly oppose any amendments to Senate Bill 6002 (SB 6002), the Driver Privacy Act, that would carve out any exemptions for the Seattle Police Department from regulations on automated license plate readers (ALPRs). SB 6002 protects our civil rights by limiting data retention, access, and uses like civil immigration enforcement, preventing warrantless tracking of our movements. Seattle Police Department’s push for a broad exemption threatens this progress, risking misuse and outright abuse against protesters, immigrants, and communities of color amid its growing surveillance networks. These carve-outs would erode civil liberties for all Washingtonians. Preserve SB 6002’s strong protections without exemptions for any police departments to uphold equity and free speech statewide. Thank you for defending our rights.
