Just days ago, the Trump White House insisted their war on Iran was over and the U.S. had won. Now we are once again exchanging fire, as the American military attempts to restore global energy supply lines to where they were before Trump attacked. We are well beyond the 60-day legal deadline for the President to get legislative permission to continue military operations, and it is time for Congress to fulfill its duty and bring this conflict to an end.
We have killed more than 3,300 Iranians, many of them innocent civilians. We’ve lost 13 American lives. We’ve sent gas prices skyrocketing and kneecapped the global economy, hitting working families’ pocketbooks and destabilizing nations. And this administration has lied to us about all of it – from strikes on elementary schools to inadequate protections for our soldiers to the hit we are taking at the pump.
They claim they have a strategy, they don’t. They claim they’ve outlined clear objectives, they haven’t. They claim the American people are behind them as polls show this war is less popular than Vietnam at its peak. They’ve insisted they have a deal when they haven’t, they’ve insisted we’ve brought Iran to heel when Tehran has more leverage than ever, they’ve insisted there’s been a regime change when it’s just another Khamenei and different generals calling the shots.
It goes without saying that Congress should act because our system was designed for the people’s branch to have a say in matters of war and peace. But beyond the legal and philosophical reasons, Trump and his team demonstrate daily that they simply cannot be trusted with this life-and-death responsibility. Letting them continue to run wild is a recipe for even further disaster, death, and destruction.
We are calling on you to vote for a war powers resolution that will bring this conflict to an end, and publicly affirm you will not support a massive appropriations package to allow Trump to continue to fight. Use your power to stop the lies and the bloodshed for good.
