As your constituent, I'm writing to push back on the Trump administration's efforts to rewrite appropriations laws Congress passed - and to invest in essential services that lead to community stability and safety.
Between the chainsaw DOGE is taking to federal agencies and their grant programs, the Department of Justice's recent abrupt cancellation of existing grants, and other proposed funding cuts, it is clear community safety is at risk. On the chopping block are programs that provide mentorship to children, reduce violence, help people find housing, create employment opportunities, and provide addiction treatment and mental healthcare.
We all benefit from these common-sense programs. Without them, children will lose access to critical mentorship, older Americans could go hungry, parents could go without the support they need to raise their families, more people could wind up on the streets, and people who are seeking treatment for addiction and mental healthcare could struggle to find access to care.
Across the country, mayors, governors, service-providers, and everyday people are raising alarms about the devastating impact funding cuts are having on their communities. Moreover, research shows Americans across the political divide want safety solutions that focus on the root causes of crime.
Despite warnings and pleas from local community leaders, experts, and the public at large, the Trump administration has continued to cut essential services to advance his cruel agenda. But Congress holds the power of the purse, not the president. That's why I'm urging you to follow the will of the people and choose community safety now.
