ICE Misconduct in 2025: U.S. Citizens and Immigrants Are Paying the Price
I urge you to take immediate action in response to ICE operations in 2025 that have wrongfully detained U.S. citizens and subjected immigrants—including children, legal residents, and asylum seekers—to unlawful, violent, and degrading treatment.
Wrongful Detention of U.S. Citizens in 2025
• Jensy Machado, a naturalized citizen, was stopped at gunpoint and handcuffed in Virginia despite showing valid ID.
• A Puerto Rican U.S. veteran was detained in New Jersey despite proof of citizenship; his family was later targeted for speaking Spanish.
• Leonardo Garcia Venegas, U.S.-born, was detained in Alabama; his REAL ID was dismissed until verified by Social Security number.
ICE’s Militarized Raids and Abuses During Apprehension
ICE agents increasingly wear battle-style armor, carry military-grade weapons, and conceal their identities with masks—storming homes, workplaces, and public events with tactics that resemble combat operations more than law enforcement.
• In Texas, ICE used flash-bangs at a child’s birthday party, arresting 47 people, including nine children.
• In Louisiana, two Iranian PhD students were detained after agents posed as local police; both were later released by court order.
• In Massachusetts, a legal resident was beaten during arrest, accused of fraud, and threatened with deportation.
• In Los Angeles, raids using stun grenades and masked agents led to over 100 arrests and protest clashes.
• In San Francisco, 15 people—including a 3-year-old child—were detained during check-ins and held overnight without food.
Abuse in Detention Facilities
• A July 2025 Human Rights Watch report found detainees in Florida ICE centers were shackled, forced to kneel and eat off chairs “like dogs,” exposed to extreme cold, overcrowding, and medical neglect.
• As of June 2025, ICE held over 56,000 people—40% above capacity—many in unsafe, unsanitary, and inhumane conditions.
Congress Must Respond
I respectfully urge you to:
1. Publicly condemn ICE’s abuses against citizens and immigrants.
2. Support legislation ensuring due process, banning racial profiling, restricting militarized tactics, and mandating humane enforcement.
3. Hold oversight hearings on wrongful detentions, violent raids, and in-custody mistreatment.
Congress must ensure federal enforcement agencies operate within the law and respect human dignity—regardless of immigration status. Without swift reform and oversight, ICE operations will continue to degrade constitutional and human rights across communities.
