Protecting voting rights, opposing SAVE Act disenfranchisement

The SAVE Act, co-sponsored by Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Nick Begich, raises significant concerns about voter disenfranchisement in Alaska. While proponents claim it merely requires proof of citizenship for voter registration, evidence suggests the bill imposes unreasonable barriers for many Alaskans to exercise their fundamental right to vote. The proposed legislation places the burden on election officials to determine if individuals without readily available documentation have sufficiently proven their citizenship status. This ambiguous requirement risks disproportionately impacting rural and indigenous communities, as well as voters lacking access to updated identification or birth certificates. Such arbitrary barriers undermine the integrity of our electoral process and risk suppressing the voices of marginalized groups. Ensuring equal access to the ballot box is a cornerstone of our democracy. Measures that impede this access, whether intentionally or not, erode public trust and disenfranchise eligible voters. I urge you to reconsider your support for the SAVE Act and prioritize legislation that safeguards, rather than restricts, the voting rights of all Alaskans.
