am writing to urge you to openly support and vote “yes” on Senator Bernie Sanders’s Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, aimed at halting $20 billion in U.S. arms sales to Israel. Supporting these resolutions is an essential step toward ensuring that the United States is no longer supporting the egregious human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank.
The international community is sounding the alarm, and we cannot ignore these warnings. In June, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on states and companies to end arms transfers to Israel, emphasizing that continued support enables systematic violations of human rights, including war crimes. UN High Commissioner Volker Turk has highlighted the immediate risk that such arms transfers pose: enabling indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations and essential infrastructure in Gaza, leading to enormous human suffering. The UN’s message is clear—states that continue arms transfers to Israel bear responsibility for fueling these atrocities.
Senator Sanders’s resolutions offer a critical opportunity to prevent further escalation in Gaza. As noted in the fact sheet accompanying the resolutions, Israel has repeatedly violated international law, using U.S.-supplied arms to bomb civilian areas, including hospitals, schools, and places of worship. Reports detail the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas, causing unimaginable suffering and widespread destruction. U.S. arms are central to these operations, and by suspending arms sales, we can immediately limit the tools available for these actions.
By opposing these arms transfers, you would be joining a growing chorus of voices who recognize that the path to peace and security in the region does not lie in perpetuating cycles of violence. It is time to prioritize human rights and work to end the mass civilian suffering in Gaza and the occupied territories. Voting “yes” on these resolutions reflects a commitment to the values of peace, justice, and the protection of innocent lives.
This is a chance to bring meaningful change and demonstrate that the United States will no longer be an enabler of human rights abuses. I urge you to take a strong stance in support of the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund further atrocities and that the United States stands on the right side of history.
