Support the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act

I'm reaching out to urge you to co-sponsor the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act (S1464/A1749) introduced by Assemblymember Glick and Senator Harckham. This bill passed the Senate last June but stalled in the Assembly—let’s make sure it doesn’t get sidelined again. With climate emissions rising and plastic waste skyrocketing, we can't afford any more delays. The Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act will require companies to slash single-use plastic packaging by 30% within 12 years and redesign what remains to be reusable or recyclable. It also bans toxic chemicals in packaging, like PFAS and phthalates, which have no business being in our food or personal care products. The bill also shifts the burden of waste management from taxpayers to the companies that create it, providing relief for municipal recycling programs and helping reduce climate change pollution. Why is this critical now? Plastic is a major climate polluter. If it were a country, it would be the 5th biggest greenhouse gas emitter. 40% of plastic is for single-use packaging that clogs landfills, pollutes the air, and damages the environment. New York has the most waste incinerators in the U.S., spewing toxic pollution into the air. NYC spends $429 million each year to export its waste—it's time for polluting companies to pay their fair share. This bill is a no-brainer for a cleaner, healthier New York.
