An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Vote No on HB13 (Laken Riley Act)

30 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I am writing to urge you to vote NO on HB13, the so-called Laken Riley Act. This bill expands federal immigration enforcement into local policing and county jails, allowing arrest and detention based on immigration status alone and requiring compliance with ICE detainers that are not judicial warrants. These provisions raise serious constitutional concerns and increase the risk of unlawful detention and racial profiling. HB13 would also undermine public safety by eroding trust between communities and local law enforcement, making people less likely to report crimes, seek help, or cooperate with investigations. It diverts local resources away from their core public safety mission while exposing counties and municipalities to increased legal and financial risk. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. Alabama should not compel local agencies to act as de facto immigration authorities at the expense of civil rights, community trust, and effective policing. For these reasons, I strongly urge you to oppose HB13 and vote NO.
