An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
End Trump’s Illegal Tariffs
26 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
The U.S. Treasury Department has released the numbers from July 2025 for government revenue from customs duties. The number is $29.6 billion, nearly three times the typical monthly tariffs over the previous four years.
Despite President Trump’s nonsensical claim that tariffs are paid by the exporting countries, they are in fact paid by US importers, who typically pass the additional cost on to purchasers of the imported item or finished product. This makes Trump’s broad tariffs a regressive tax on Americans and a drag on the economy.
We are starting to see the effects of this drag on production and employment. And consumers are already getting hit with higher retail prices.
Trump’s tariffs were not approved by Congress and do not fall under the auspices of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA). It’s time for Congress to exercise its tariff authority under Article I, Section 8 to halt Trump’s illegal tariffs and our slide into a recession or worse.
It’s time for Congress to act!
