I’m not an expert on homelessness policy; I’m just a Virginia resident who’s been listening to people and organizations I trust. From what I’m hearing, the city of Charlottesville is about to displace the unhoused community living under Free Bridge, where neighbors have been building relationships and stability for over a year.
The problem is, this sweep is set to happen without clear justification, transparent process, or dignified housing alternatives. People who’ve done their best to comply with inconsistent city demands will be left with no safe place to go.
I know encampment decisions are usually made locally, but state leaders can step in when lives and dignity are on the line. I’m asking you to:
1️⃣ Publicly urge Charlottesville leaders to pause the displacement until safe, viable alternatives are in place.
2️⃣ Request a briefing on the city’s process, notice, and housing options for residents.
3️⃣ Explore state-level protections like requiring minimum notice, humane relocation standards, and guaranteed housing options before any sweep.
4️⃣ Advocate for emergency state funding for housing, storage, and support services so our city can respond to homelessness with compassion, not harm.
I believe Virginia can lead with both heart and policy. Even if the path is complicated, there’s still time to choose dignity and transparency. I hope you’ll follow your moral compass and help protect our neighbors at Free Bridge.
Other cities have done this successfully and built tiny houses for their unhoused residents. I believe Virginia can be a leader here, too.
