I am writing to you as a constituent to urge you to strongly oppose both the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act and the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act.
I support election security, federal law already requires that only citizens vote in federal elections, and states have systems in place to enforce this. Our enforcement is excellent to the extent that the frequency of illegal voting is so low as to be non-existent, without the ability to affect outcomes.
Both of these Acts are unnecessary, burdensome bills that will create new barriers to voting for millions of eligible citizens, particularly those without easy access to passports or birth certificates (including students, the elderly, and voters of color).
This legislation threatens to disenfranchise legitimate voters and burdens election officials. If a person changed their last name after marriage and does not have an updated US passport or birth certificate (a birth certificate modified with their married last name) the SAVE and MEGA Acts will stop them from voting. Millions of women lack these documents. I have never heard of anyone modifying their birth certificate after taking their husband’s name. It is ludicrous. It is designed specifically to disenfranchise women.
Please protect the freedom to vote and vote NO on the SAVE Act and the MEGA Act.
