Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas. I truly did not think there is any action that DJT could take that could shock me further. But he has. On September 5 there will be an event at Trump’s Bedminster golf club. It is organized and hosted by The America Project, a pro-Trump nonprofit based in Florida that is calling the reception and dinner “the J6 Awards Gala.” A video promoting the event features clips of Trump praising those who are being prosecuted for taking part in the Capitol assault. “They ought to release the J6 hostages. They’ve suffered enough,” Trump says in the video from one of his campaign speeches. “I call them hostages. Some people call them prisoners. I call them hostages.” Trump is listed as an invited speaker on The America Project’s website, but it is unclear if he will attend the event. The reception is the same day that U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan is scheduled to hold a hearing on the federal prosecution against Trump for his attempt to overturn the 2020 election he lost. No irony there. General admission tickets are listed at $1,500 on the group’s website, with “VIP” tickets for sale at $2,500, while $50,000 buys a “VIP Platinum table of 12,” which includes hors d’oeuvres and a photo opportunity with actual “J6ers.” Also unknown is whether Trump is donating the use of his golf club to the group or if the AP is paying rent and catering costs, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. When Trump’s “Save America” political committee, which he uses to pay his legal bills, staged an event at Bedminster in May, it paid $80,533.74 to the country club — the profits from which go directly into Trump’s pocket. We know he doesn’t give the use of his properties away. And paid for or free does not make a bit of difference anyway. In either case an ex-President, hoping to be future President, of the United States of America, is hosting a fundraiser for citizens who decided democracy is no longer their idea of freedom and took the law into their own hands. Who attacked and desecrated the seat of our democracy. With the sole intent of keeping Trump in the Oval Office. And he stands to make a bundle off of the insurrection he fomented. This is beyond reprehensible. This should be disqualification to run for any public office, much less the Presidency. And if no one in your current version of the Republican Party does not condemn, disavow, and strongly object to this whole despicable spectacle, then your party deserves to go down in flames. Along with the guy who you helped to destroy your own party. But maybe you’ve forgotten what shame feels like.
