An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

ICE Detention Centers

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Hearing that ICE is not allowing congresspeople access to their detention facilities for congressional oversight is important. However, most of us never knew congresspeople checked in on federal facilities. We never knew you could do it, and so finding out someone was not allowing you to do it doesn’t seem like a big deal. Also, the videos suck.   Scene opens; well-dressed congressperson pushes a doorbell. A voice comes out of a box on the wall saying, “You can’t come in.” Congressperson walks away pissed. End Scene.   Not great drama!   How about going to some other federal facility and showing us how it is supposed to work. You and other congresspeople should be going to federal prisons, US mints, US Marshal’s detention centers, Fort Knox, etc. and showing us how it works when it does work. Then show someone pushing the doorbell at an ICE detention center. Without context you are not showing us why it’s such a big deal to get turned away.
