The proposed budget cuts to social safety net programs using the end-run tactic of budget reconciliation are wrong and must be opposed. They will have a devastating impact on our most vulnerable citizens, the elderly, disabled, and children. However, even families who are supporting their aging parents and grandparents will be affected if they must become the new ‘bank’ to pay for services that are drastically reduced.
This president has continuously lied about his aim to preserve Medicare, and his enablers in the majority party are attempting grand larceny of the social safety net programs, to transfer that money to special interests and their rich donors. State governments will not be able to absorb the loss of federal funds, and this threatens our entire economy, as well as the Affordable Care Act.
We are a nation that prides itself on freedom of choice, but cutting programs that aid the sick, elderly, disabled and children give them no freedom at all.
The wealthy can afford a few thousand in taxes, and could pay more. It will not affect their material wealth. Indeed, the top 1% have more money than their grandchildren can spend in their lifetimes. Corporations are not going to use the money they might receive from this transfer of wealth. They’re going to continue to squirrel it away as they always do, unless we send a clear signal that these programs are necessary to preserving civil order.
Please use what expertise and parliamentary procedures you have to block these tactics.
