The recent bombing of a drinking water reservoir in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip by Israeli forces is a grave violation of international humanitarian law. As per reports, the 401st Brigade of the Israeli Armored Corps carried out the demolition, following orders from brigade commanders. A soldier even shared a video of the explosion on social media with a callous caption. This unjustified attack has raised serious alarms about the worsening water crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip. Deliberately destroying civilian infrastructure like water reservoirs and desalination plants is unacceptable. It not only exacerbates the humanitarian crisis but also constitutes a form of collective punishment against the Palestinian population. The mayor of Rafah has rightly condemned this act as a "crime against humanity". The destruction of vital resources amidst an ongoing military offensive is a blatant disregard for human life and dignity. It is imperative that the international community takes strong action to halt such violations and ensure Israel's compliance with the laws of war. Continued military aid and funding to Israel emboldens such transgressions and undermines efforts towards a just and lasting peace.
