Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to reject and counter Republicans in Congress that are attempting to limit the EPA in regulating soot from industrial and transportation sources. Earlier this year, EPA proposed new protections for soot. Soot pollution (also known as particle pollution or PM2.5) is one of the leading causes of death around the world, responsible for well over 100,000 premature deaths per year in the US alone. It's also linked to an alarming range of health harms, including asthma attacks, COPD, lung cancer, impaired immune health, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impacts, and adverse birth outcomes. Because their little lungs are still developing, soot is particularly harmful for babies and children.
We need strong soot protections finalized as quickly as possible—the health of our families and communities can't wait. My family favors stricter enforcement. We all get healthier. Thank you for your service.
