Restrict Billionaire Spending and Defend Democratic Elections

Restrict the political spending power of billionaires and corporations before the next election cycle makes the problem worse. In 2024, about 20 percent of all campaign donations came from billionaires and their families, more than $3 billion total. Six individuals or families gave more than $100 million each, led by Elon Musk at an estimated $290 million. That is not a campaign finance system. It is an auction.
This cycle, billionaires have already poured in at least $1.7 billion, with 69 percent going to Republican candidates according to Americans for Tax Fairness. But this is not just a partisan problem. Liberal donors like Michael Bloomberg are spending heavily too, and they use that leverage to push Democratic candidates away from wealth taxes and stronger corporate regulation. When one donor can effectively veto a policy direction, the voters who support that policy lose their voice entirely.
Citizens United opened this door, and Congress has the power to push back. One person casting one ballot should not be drowned out by one billionaire writing a nine-figure check. Pass legislation that limits the ability of the superrich to dominate elections, and do it before another cycle locks in an even deeper oligarchy.
