NO NY MASK BAN

I am writing to express my deep concern as a Jewish New Yorker regarding proposals to ban face masks in public places, especially as COVID-19, other viruses, and pollution continue to affect our community. I am particularly alarmed that such a ban could be framed as a measure to combat antisemitism. The fight against bigotry should never come at the cost of individuals’ safety and ability to take precautions against illness. Banning masks under this guise not only undermines public health but also risks harming the very people it purports to protect. Masks are crucial for public health, and banning them would endanger not only vulnerable groups, such as the immunocompromised, disabled, and older adults, but all New Yorkers. A mask ban, claiming to protect Jews, would actually place us in greater danger. Jewish tradition places the sanctity of life (pikuach nefesh) above all else, and wearing masks is a mitzvah that protects both ourselves and others. A mask ban contradicts this principle and infringes upon my religious freedom and safety. It also risks increasing harassment and assault against mask wearers, particularly among racial minorities, and would disproportionately affect BIPOC New Yorkers. I urge you to reject any legislation that undermines public health, compromises safety, and violates the values of my faith.
