H.RES.461 is a resolution that aims to condemn the use of elementary and secondary school facilities to provide shelter for aliens who are not admitted to the United States. However, I am opposed to this resolution, as I believe it is both inhumane and counterproductive.
Firstly, denying shelter to individuals who are not admitted to the United States, including minors, is an inhumane act. It is well established that children, in particular, are among the most vulnerable groups when it comes to being displaced from their homes and seeking shelter in a foreign country. It is unconscionable to deny them basic necessities such as shelter and basic care.
In addition, many of those who are seeking shelter in the United States are fleeing from violence and persecution in their home countries. It is our duty as a compassionate nation to provide help and protection to those who are in need, regardless of their nationality or immigration status. These individuals are often in dire need of medical attention, safety, and a warm place to sleep, and it is our responsibility to provide them with these basic needs.
Secondly, condemning the use of school facilities to provide shelter is counterproductive. If we refuse to provide these essential services, communities will be less likely to guarantee protections, which could harm the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals and put added pressure on already-strained immigration agencies. In addition, it could leave thousands of people, including many unaccompanied minors, on the streets, putting them in danger of various forms of violence.
Moreover, conditions in immigrant detention centers are known, and widely-documented to be extremely unsafe to the point of being inhumane. Children have died in these facilities due to lack of proper ACA, overcrowding and inadequate medical attention show that the notion of sheltering immigrants in these centers is a recipe for disaster and flies in the face of American values.
In conclusion, H.RES.461 is a misguided resolution that should be opposed. It is inhumane to deny shelter and safe haven to vulnerable immigrants, particularly minors. Moreover, it is counterproductive, as it could lead to further harm and exploitation of those in need of sanctuary. Instead, let us prioritize the safety and well-being of those who are seeking refuge, and support efforts that aim to help and protect them.
