An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Calif. only)
KEEP DIABLO CANYON OPEN TO AVOID EMISSIONS INCREASING AND MORE EXPENSIVE POWER
4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
California is in a difficult energy situation. Heat waves made necessary to lift the environmental restrictions on emissions from natural gas, hydroelectric power is failing because of the drought and we are even buying more natural gas generators to make sure we avoid blackouts. We are subject to increasingly frequent flex periods and the emissions limits for natural gas plants has been waved away during the summer. The picture is dire and it will get worse, as we plan to electrify our transportation system, and our heating and cooking infrastructure. We desperately need more power. Our electricity is the fourth most expensive in the whole country, and it will get more expensive. At the same time, in 4 years, we are planning to get rid of the largest source of emissions-free power, Diablo Canyon. This is a political decision that needs to be overturned. We are in an emergency and California is clearly not keeping up. We need to use every possible tool available to us to not only fight climate change, but to keep our living standards, to make sure that the poorest among us and the already marginalized are not subject to unnecessary poverty brought by high energy prices. Closing Diablo Canyon is a self imposed error that needs to be corrected. In the future, when reliable renewable power backed by batteries that doesn't rely on fossil fuels when the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow, makes more than 50% of our grid, maybe we can start the conversation about closing Diablo. As things stand now, it'd lead to terrible environmental, social and economic consequences. We need to stop this. Please keep Diablo Canyon Power Plant open.
